The History of Pizza 1000 years B.C.
The word "Pizza" derives from an Italian word meaning point. It appeared for the first time in the Neapolitain dialect as "picea" or "piza" making reference to a "slice of pie". Pizza , in all it's shapes is part of the Italian culture. Two cultures have influenced the Italian's, the Etruscans to the north & the Greeks to the south. Pizza , in it's infancy was a meal for the poor. It is only in the 16th century that Pizza reached an unequaled popularity with visitors. The first pizzeria, named Port Alba saw the light of day in Naples in 1830 & was considered a tourist treat. This pizzeria is still in operation today, in testament to pizza as the first " fast food ". In the 20th century with immigration to the New World, a new dimension & culture transformed pizza. It is only after W.W.II that a taste & demand for pizza emerged, brought back by returning American soldiers. Today there are as many types of pizza as there are cultures. In 1995 Resto Bar Zool had it's pizza oven built by an Italian craftsman, who had over 20 ovens in Quebec to his credit. Using old country techniques acquired in his youth at his masters side, this master now allows us to enjoy pizza that's a mix of Italian & down home.
Enjoy.. Bon Appétit
